I hadn’t seen a play since Aladdin back in 2020, which was amazing by the way, so stepping into the world of Stranger Things: The First Shadow had me buzzing with excitement. I was especially glad it wasn’t a musical. I wanted to experience something different, something that would surprise me. What I got was beyond anything I could have imagined.

From the moment the opening sequence unfolded to the iconic Stranger Things intro being played (a brilliant touch), I was completely locked in. The storytelling, the special effects, the sound design, it all had us, the audience on the edge of our seats. I could feel right away that this would be unlike anything I’d ever experienced in live theater.

As the second act began, everything intensified. The pace quickened, the visuals became even more jaw-dropping, and the emotional layers hit harder. There were moments on that stage that were so bold and innovative, they’ve stuck with me ever since. One in particular, a slow-motion scene, was nothing short of extraordinary. I’ve never seen anything like it. The way the stage itself moved, how the actors interacted with the audience, how every set change felt like a cinematic shift, it kept me intrigued, curious, and constantly in awe. It truly inspired me to think more boldly and creatively in my own work.

It was also the branding of it all. At the very end of the play the iconic “next episode” was displayed which trilled the audience. A beautiful way to extend the Netflix culture to the stage. Then right after we get treated to the final season trailer. All the stops were pulled for this experience, and I loved every ounce of it.

And I can’t go without mentioning Louis McCartney (picture with him below). His performance left me stunned. The way he embodied Henry Creel (001) was absolutely masterful. He had the entire theater captivated, he was that character to the core. I was completely taken by his performance; it was a privilege to witness his talent live on stage.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow didn’t just entertain; it redefined what’s possible in live storytelling. I left the theater not just impressed but creatively ignited.
